Gias Uddin Al Mamun acquitted in arms case

The High Court has acquitted businessman Gias Uddin Al Mamun, a close friend of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, in an arms case, in which he was sentenced to 10 years’ jail.
The HC also scrapped the trial court verdict that sentenced Mamun to 10 years jail in the case in 2007.
The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter passed the order on Monday after hearing a petition filed by Mamun challenging the trial court verdict.
Senior lawyer Barrister Mohammad Sayed Ahmed Raza stood for Mamun during hearing of his appeal.
The court came up with the order as the allegations brought against Mamun for possessing illegal arms have not been proved, a lawyer of Mamun said.
Mamun was arrested On January 30 in 2007. He was acquitted from HC in four cases and later, was released from jail on August 6, 2024.
On March 26, 2007, a case was filed against Mamun under the Arms Act and on July 3 in the same year, a court sentenced him to 10 years jail in the case.  A petition was filed with the High Court challenging the verdict.
Meanwhile, 20 cases were also filed against Mamun on charges of his alleged involvement in corruption, extortion, money laundering and tax evasion.
